I chose social work as a major because I would like to help people function "better" in society. I have always been willing to help others at a young age. I enjoy listening to people, interacting with children, as well as catering to the senior citizens. I have had six months of experience working in juvenile services in the state of Alabama. I currently work full time at a special needs facility for young adults. I have 20 plus volunteer hours with working at the local veterans' hospital and have implemented an after school program for children age 5- 14 years of age. When I graduate I plan to attend graduate school and practice community organization. Working with children brings a challenge as well as a passion each and everyday.

I choose social work, as a career because I want to make a difference in the lives of those who need help the most. After graduating form Tuskegee University I plan to attend a graduate program to receive my masters in social work and public health. My future career goal is to work with the elderly at a hospital or nursing home as a medical social worker. After working for a few years I plan to than go in to business for myself by opening my own agency specifically catering to the needs of the elderly. |

As a social worker in training, I am inspired to help or aid people and their situations, being good or bad. Tuskegee University has instilled in me great knowledge, experience, and the ability to apply what I've learned to any situations. My childhood experiences are also important tools, in which they have motivated me to assist others in knowing the difference between the right and wrong paths to travel. I grew up in the tough streets of Miami-Dade county, where temptations are constantly presenting themselves, and following the wrong crowd often ends up in ugly or troubled situations; being propositioned to sell drugs, pressured by peers to rob people, or anything that's not positive, is often encouraged by teens in the inner city. Luckily, I've got a strong family that kept me from straying down the wrong path and involved me in year-round sports to keep a positive perspective on life. As a social worker, I want to make it my life to help young people understand that it's possible for them to escape the harsh inner city street, by becoming more educated and getting involved in sports to work as an anti-drug solution. Keeping kids around positive things often make for a more positive person. Once I've received my degree, I want to put it to use by helping the youths of poverty communities, and by running my own year round mentoring center, where sports will be implemented as a way to save our youths from the streets. My experiences with my junior placement at the Y.M.C.A showed me how effective sports could be with youths, and I loved every minute of it. Just to see smiles on the kids faces, became everlasting memories to me. |

I chose social work because I wanted to have a positive, life-long impact on a persons life. Social work gives me the opportunity to help a variety of people with a variety of problems. Years from now when I look back I hope to feel a sense of satisfaction knowing that I never gave up on any of my clients regardless of their situation or them giving up on themselves. |

When I made the final decision to choose Social Work as a profession, I always wondered how come I didn't make this decision earlier. Growing up I would change what I wanted to be almost every year. One day I would want to be a teacher and the next day, I would want to become a nurse. It wasnt until a year ago that I decided I wanted to become a Social Worker. This decision was based on the social workers that I have come into contact with and the research that I have done on Social Workers. To me, a social worker is someone who puts their personal issues to the side and helps others who are in need of some type of help. I think that one of the reasons that makes Social Work is that it covers a broad spectrum of clients and fields that one can work in. One could work with juveniles or the elderly or they could work victims of domestic violence or pregnant teens. As I mentioned earlier, I love this aspect of social work, because I dont have to stick to one single client or field of practice. After graduating from Tuskegee, I plan to attend Graduate school at Georgia State University. My target client population as of right now is to work with children, basically around the elementary school age. I plan to work as an elementary school social worker around the metro Atlanta area. |
